San Francisco Disc Herniation Treatment Center incorporates Meditation into it's Treatment Regimen

Disc pain sufferers want to know if there is anything they can do to help negate, slow down or reverse the effects of mental stress on the body. Well, the answer is YES, with Meditation. When thinking of meditation, some people may envision a yogi sitting under a Bodhi tree, claiming to have found the path to enlightenment. Richard Geller, of Medworks Corporate Meditation Programs in Boston claims that " Meditation can be done instantly, and even if you do it for just one to five minutes, it puts a whole different spin on the day."   Like any activity or lifestyle change designed to improve health it needs to be practiced on a regular basis. Morning is best, because the mind is fresh. Here is a meditation from Dr. Herbert Benson, founding president of the Mind/Body Medical Institute in Chestnut Hill, Mass., and associate professor at Harvard Medical School:

Mindful Practice

  • Sit quietly in a comfortable position, with your back straight and shoulders relaxed
  • Close your eyes and relax your muscles.
  • Repeat a word, phrase or even a prayer-this is your focus word.
  • Breathe slowly while repeating your focus word.
  • Don't be concerned about how well you're doing, and when other thoughts enter your head, acknowledge them and then return to your practice.
  • Repeat for 10 to 20 minutes.
  • When finished, don't stand up immediately. Sit quietly for a moments and allow your everyday thoughts to return.
  • Make time to practice this technique once or twice a day.

So, the more you do, the more you gain. It's physical, mental, and chemical stresses that take their toll on the body. You have knobs that are adjustable by YOU that you can either adjust in the direction of health, or in the direction of illness, the choice is yours.
